On August 6th Richard Branson and the crew, new and old, of the Virgin Atlantic Challenger II sailed the recently rescued and refitted boat into Fowey harbour, 27 years after it broke the Blue Riband record for a transatlantic crossing by water in just three days, eight hours and thirty one minutes. Sailing into Fowey harbour only an hour late there were celebrations all round — the press snapping away and shouting to Richard, the crowds cheering and passing up books to sign and pasties to eat seriously, a chap from Pasty Presto in Fowey came down with a sealed box of delicious hot pasties — thank you! And of course a bottle of champagne for Richard to dowse the crowd with.

Powerboat lovers have been given a chance to own a piece of transatlantic history, as Virgin Atlantic Challenger II has been put up for sale. The original F1-style bladder tanks, which nearly failed during the transatlantic voyage, have been removed and replaced with four new aluminium and epoxy resin-lined fuel tanks, giving Virgin Atlantic Challenger II a fuel capacity of tonnes. The original twin 2,hp MTU V12 turbo-diesel engines have also been rebuilt. All the mechanical parts and primary systems are still in place, but have been stripped down and rebuilt, piece-by-piece. And even though she is nearing her 28th birthday, Virgin Atlantic Challenger II still has fewer than 1, engine hours on the clock.
